Sommer Roman is an American artist who lives and works in California. She recycles textiles to invite us to explore the intangible aspects of our lives. More specifically, her work focuses on the body, the domestic sphere and nature, creating visual experiences that question ourselves and our relationship with our environment. She uses clearly identified materials, bearing the imprint of lives lived.
Sommer Roman's non-traditional approach to textiles also pays homage to the place women once occupied in the home, where sewing and textile work were part of domestic activities. Her work seeks to reclaim this history by breaking with tradition and taking a playful, sensual approach that her ancestors could not.
Through this process of deconstruction-reconstruction, hierarchies are blurred, domesticity, disconnection and unbridled consumerism are dismantled, and the result is an unusual hybridization of shapes and colors.
